Manuscript and printed items relating to Borthwick's contributions to the Speculative Society, a Scottish debating society which attracted literary and legal figures to participate in discussions of current events. The volume contains autograph notes for and drafts and fair copies of speeches delivered by Borthwick on topics including national education, Parliamentary reform, the currency, Catholic Emancipation, the Poor Law, and the "effects of Theatrical Entertainment" on the common people. Most items date from between 1807 and 1811. The boxed material, most dating from 1823-26, is largely related to the pamphlet debate between Borthwick and Henry Cockburn on the possible extension of the parliamentary franchise in Edinburgh, and includes several printed copies of their pamphlets; the manuscript of Borthwick's Examination of the Considerations submitted to the Householders of Edinburgh.... (1824); letters from Sir Robert Peel, Robert Dundas, and others concerning the issue; notes; and a printed petition for extension of the franchise.
